This 4-day pre-recorded webinar provides a general introduction to the why and how of Expressive Play Therapy: a holistic and integrative approach to Play Therapy that addresses in concrete terms the physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual needs of children in therapy.

During the first two days we will consider the function and description of children’s art and play through the developmental stages. We will also explore the theoretical framework of Expressive Play Therapy and the major components of this approach that incorporate the relationship, the milieu, a wide variety of expressive therapies, and whenever possible, family therapy.

During the other two days, we will address the guiding principles of child-centered play therapy, the intake process, setting up a playroom, how to structure a play therapy session, when to lead and when to follow, and the issue of permissiveness and limits. This lecture material will be illustrated in concrete terms as we view and discuss a video taped play therapy session.

This 4-day pre-recorded webinar provides the foundational knowledge for the more advanced play therapy topics addressed in further webinars and seminars.

To improve the viewing experience of the video recording, some experiential expressive art and play activities have been edited. However, the group instructions and group debriefing with related comments and questions have been included, thus allowing participation if desired.

Discuss the theoretical and ideological principles on which Expressive Play Therapy is based: bringing together the role of nature, nurture, and trauma.
Describe the function and role of art and play through successive child developmental stages and recognize the art and play of children through developmental stages.
Discuss the Expressive Therapies component of Expressive Play Therapy and their role in facilitating the healing process in a play therapy session.
Discuss the multisensory Milieu component of Expressive Play Therapy in its soothing and grounding role, including nature and companion animals as co-therapists.
Discuss the crucial role of the Relationship component of Expressive Play Therapy and the essential role of the play therapist’s capacity to attune, follow, and guide each child in their own unique way.
Discuss the role of the Family Therapy or caregiver involvement component of Expressive Play Therapy and the challenges in engaging the caregiver as a co-therapist.
Demonstrate art and play modalities through an image making process using non-directive and structured exercises.
List the major principles of child-centered play therapy.
List the specific information needed to conduct an effective intake session and best assess the needs of the child based on their living situation.
Design a playroom that is organized on the holistic and integrative principles of Expressive Play Therapy.
Structure a play therapy session that takes into consideration the vital beginning, middle, and end phases.
Identify issues of permissiveness and limit setting and provide the appropriate level of containment and freedom beneficial to each child.
Use the language of play and reflecting technique to establish rapport with children.
Assess and discuss a video taped case study based on the information and practices discussed in the Expressive Play Therapy webinar.

For participants wishing to receive CEUs for the purpose of continuing education programs, a successful student evaluation by Marie Jose in the form of a post test will be required. There will be an additional charge of $75 for this service.
